Spring anime that passed the test

"My" test that is. Earlier, I made a little prediction on what anime I'd dig and those that I am so-so about. Curiously, one of those that I'm so-so about became one my favourites. Here is my list of favourite anime from Spring 2006. And the no.1 winner is:

ouran.jpg

1. Ouran High School Host Club

For being the anime that consistently makes me laugh each time I watch it. This show has been such a delight – the quality of the animation is superb, and I so love the work by Tamaki's seiyuu, Mamoru Miyano. Without him, I don't think I'd like the show much! And a big thumbs up for each time Haruhi mutters, "Those rich bastards." Another big plus point – it's fansubbed really quickly.

It's not difficult to see why Ouran has won the hearts of many. Haruhi is such a cool, unflappable heroine while Tamaki is such … a ditz. And we love Tamaki as the ditz .. πŸ˜‰ Though, since I read the manga as well, he will reveal a suprisingly angsty side to his personality. Can't wait to see Haruhi's reaction to all that!

Yes I am a Haruhi x Tamaki shipper.

2. Saiunkoku Monogatari

Now, why isn't this no.1? Minus points because it's subbed really slowly. Sniff. But the bishies and the intriguing and rather romantic dynamics between Ryuuki and Shuurei and the complicated plot (believe me, things will really get complicated with SPOILER!! this old guy who is actually a young guy but not really a guy but …. you'll see).

3. Tokko

A lot of people said it sucked, but I kinda like it. I have read the manga … and I don't really mind the fillers, really. I'm kinda sad that it's going to end at 13 episodes, however. Maybe I just like shows where there are dudes and dudettes in leather jackets slicing open zombies.

4. Black Lagoon

I love the whole "salaryman becomes pirate" deal. The animation is superb, and viewing it each week has become a sort of guilty pleasure. πŸ˜‰ It's like watching A-Team, anime style. Or something like that. And Revi kicks ass.

I wish there's a no.5, but I haven't had time to watch much anime. πŸ˜› Utawaremono and Jyu Oh Sei I'm downloading, but I've not really watched yet. I don't like the whole harem thing going on with Utawaremono (I think that's how it's spelt) – call me uptight, but I dislike harem shows with a vengence. Jyu Oh Sei I want to watch when the entire series is done. It's a kind of show that you have to watch in one sitting on account for the major angst. I hate to be left hanging after a harrowing ending for one episode. And man, why do I smell a tragic ending for this one? No, don't tell me if you know the ending. πŸ˜‰
Shows that I'd rather not touch. At all: Nana. But why???! Okay, I don't know, but shojo has always irked me. πŸ˜‰ I don't have much patience with the whole "Does he love me? But I'm not sure I love him but maybe he loves her" deal. I'm the type of person who'd shove the undecided guy and girl together, push them in a room, lock the door and throw away the key and yell: "Okay, have sex now!"

I like the art and animation, but if I were to watch it I'd rather watch it with the entire show already in a box set so I won't be driven mad by the weekly pussyfooting by the characters and then the long wait before we see the resolution of it.

    Since you asked, “Utawarerumono.”

Damn it, knew I spelt it wrong. πŸ˜›

  3. Karry says:

Geh…so, Ouran and Saiunkoku are not harem, and Utawareru is *suddenly* a harem show ? Isnt it the other way around ?

  4. meo says:

I haven’t have the slightest idea why utawarerumono became a harem series. XD

Mah. It’s like I agree with you totally πŸ™‚ And i don’t want to watch Nana caus ei know how emo i feeel every time i read the manga. I decided to wait for the whole manga to finish and then just grab all the chapters left and read them at one go and forget. I really am amazed at how well the characters are created in her mangas but…they’re just so…terribly…HEAVY sometimes ~_~ i can’t cope with that heaviness well

Karry – You know, I never did think of Ouran and Saiunkoku as harem shows. πŸ˜‰ Maybe because I view harem shows as when a flock of females are around one single male and somehow they always end up having their bosoms grabbed or their panties shown. πŸ˜›

I suppose Ouran and Saiunkoku is a girl’s harem show or something? Though I wonder what criteria girls want for their harem shows … bishie, check. Angst, check. Hmm…

Meo – nah, I should’ve made myself clearer. I didn’t mean to say that Uta (whatever) is a harem show, which it is not. I mean, hints of harem … with girls surrounding the lead. But no, I know it isn’t overtly a harem show. -_-” I remember watching Fate/Stay Night and getting irritated at all the girls flocking around Shirou. πŸ˜› That’s what I meant ..

Atazure – Yeah, I know. too much angst! I read Nana and she lost me at the first 10 pages. πŸ˜› I’m just not very good with romantic entanglements etc. Plus, my sister told me the ENDING. A sure fire way to ruin your apetite for a series. πŸ˜‰

I wouldn’t say SaiMono is harem at all, despite Shuurei’s role as Ryuuki’s consort. If it was a harem situation, Shuurei would be one of many women pining for Ryuuki, or Ryuuki would be one of many men trying to gain Shuurei’s attention. Ouran, too, is not really a harem because to be a harem you need to have a harem master who the harem fawn over/impede, and with Ouran we do not have that, although it does parody the format somewhat.

I think Utaware is far more harem than those too shows; the harem side is at least as prominent as the whole war thing. Haku is a raging lolicon.

Yep, the Ouran Highschool Host Club is pretty new. The first episode came out 2006-04-04 according to one famous anime info site. And it seems everyone is into it now. this show sort of reminds me of Fruits Basket so far.

//: The smilies on this site remind me of the same ones in Gaiaonline… :ninja: :\\

hmmmm.. i enjoy ouran host club.. it’s colourful n funny.. yupps.. i love tamaki! n i’m a shipper for tamakiXharuhi too! ^^
but i like saiunkoku much better.. hehs.. i love the ingenious yet childish emperor ryuuki, his 2 righthand men, cool Ran n directions-idiot kouyuu, kind n cute seiran(yes i find him very cute), of cos.. n the determine heroine shuurei.. and many of the other chars.. besides the chars.. i like the setting which resembles ancient china.. the humor at the most unexpected scenes.. the drama.. the romance? hahas.. n.. the intuiging plot.. XD
i love nana manga.. maybe i’m a shipper for shojo.. but i really love the realism of the story.. it’s not all about romance.. i think it’s also about the future they wanna build.. (=
